Durante los cien años que siguieron a esa fecha histórica, la cirugía dio grandes pasos para liberar a la humanidad del dolor, las infecciones y la enfermedad, pero los descubrimientos más trascendentes fueron objeto de menosprecio y resistencia por parte del propio estamento médico.

Hacia finales del siglo xix, los grandes avances de la medicina permitieron el acceso de los cirujanos a partes del cuerpo humano intocables hasta entonces, como el hígado, el cerebro, la médula espinal, los pulmones o la tiroides, e hicieron posible innovaciones que parecieron prodigiosas, como el trasplante de córnea, que sentaron los principios de la cirugía moderna.
